Gates--whether designed for babies or furbabies--work great to manage the areas of your house your pup can access. Your choice of options and styles will likely be primarily influenced by the space you plan to use it in. Beyond that, you should be sure the gate you choose is tall enough, taking into account your dog's athleticism and whether your pup is a jumper. And if your dog is energetic and likely to run into it or jump on it, it needs to be sturdy enough that it won't be easily knocked out of place. Some pups are more energetic and playful than others, so find one that is the right fit for yours.

Some designs are made primarily for doorway use, and others work well on stairs or to section off a room. We've put together an overview of the basic styles and some of our favorites for each, and there are plenty more so hopefully you'll be able to find one that will work for your homes.

Pressure Mount

MidWest Homes for Pets Steel Pet Gate

The MidWest Homes For Pet gate is designed by the company that brings you crates and dog pens, and it works great to keep your furbabies out of certain areas of your home. It is easy to setup since it uses a pressure-based mount to hold it into place. This works well for most dogs, but if yours likes to jump against the gate you may need to find one that mounts more permanently into place. It's also easy to operate with an easy-open latch. The main drawback is the narrow opening of the gate. However, Regalo offers several different styles, including some with wider mounts and double doors.

Hardware Mount

North States Mypet Walk Thru

We love this North States Gate since it mounts securely to your home and provides a more sturdy option that is great for rambunctious pups. North States makes gates marketed for toddlers (the Toddleroo) and pets (their MyPets line).

This model is sold under both lines. It fits wider spaces than many gates, and it also opens completely, rather than having a narrow part that opens. Hardware mounts securely to your walls and locks the gate into place, and the door swings open only one way, which makes stairway use safer. This "Walk Thru" model has no hardware below the gate that swings open, so there's nothing to step over as there would be with many other models.

Perma Indoor/Outdoor Retractable Baby Gate

This Perma Indoor/Outdoor Retractable Gate works great in unusual spaces such as angled or wide entryways. It also works well for the base of a staircase, or anywhere a door-style gate might be awkward. It rolls completely into its base when not in use, so it's less obtrusive than other styles.

Richell Pet Gate

Free Standing

The Richell Pet Gate is a great option to section off wider walkways in your home. It's free-standing design means there's no installation to worry about. Their design allows them to be paired up pretty well too if you need to divide an entire room or block an extra-large walkway, such as for an open kitchen. Richell makes several other styles too, and while we haven't had a chance to use them all, we think they all look great.
